Rodin Museum tickets in Paris for 2027: the Hôtel Biron and its garden
A stone's throw from Les Invalides, an 18th-century mansion and its garden are home to the work of Auguste Rodin, the sculptor who shook up the art of statuary at the end of the 19th century. The Thinker sits deep in thought among the rose bushes, The Gates of Hell rise against a wall of greenery and The Kiss awaits you indoors. More intimate than the capital's big museums, the Hôtel Biron lends itself to an unhurried morning: opening hours, prices, directions and practical advice are all gathered below to help you plan your 2027 visit.
The Hôtel Biron, the setting of the Rodin Museum
The mansion was built from 1727-1728 for Abraham Peyrenc de Moras, a financier who had made his fortune, to plans by Jean Aubert inspired by Jacques V Gabriel. It takes its name from the Maréchal de Biron, who bought it in 1753. From 1820 to 1905, the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus ran a girls' boarding school there and turned the formal Baroque garden into an English-style park.
When Rodin moved into the future Rodin Museum
After the nuns left, the State rented out rooms to artists: Henri Matisse, Jean Cocteau and Isadora Duncan's dance school all spent time there. On the advice of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, then his secretary, Rodin rented a studio there around 1908. He later offered to bequeath all his work and collections to the State, on condition that the building became a museum. The donation was accepted in 1916; the sculptor died in 1917 and the Rodin Museum opened to the public in 1919.
A restored Rodin Museum
A renovation carried out from 2012 to 2015 restored the wood panelling, the parquet floors and the structure of the building. The mansion reopened in November 2015 with a rethought, brighter display that lets the works breathe.
What you will discover inside the Rodin Museum
The institution's collections number more than 30,000 items: sculptures, drawings, photographs and antiquities gathered by the artist himself. A selection is shown in the rooms of the Hôtel Biron, where clay sketches, studio plasters, bronzes and marbles follow one another, giving a real sense of how a work evolved from first idea to finished piece.
Rodin Museum sculptures inside the mansion
- The Kiss, an embracing couple carved in marble.
- The Age of Bronze, a male nude whose realism caused a stir at the Salon.
- Studies of hands, faces and fragmented bodies that reveal the sculptor's working method.
Camille Claudel at the Rodin Museum
One room is devoted to Camille Claudel, Rodin's pupil, then collaborator and later artistic rival. The Mature Age, a bronze group charged with emotion, bears witness to her own talent and to the complex relationship between the two artists.
The Rodin Museum sculpture garden
For many visitors, the garden is the highlight of the visit. The bronzes converse with the paths, the clipped box hedges and the white façade of the mansion, while the golden dome of Les Invalides rises above the trees in the background.
Bronzes to look out for in the Rodin Museum garden
- The Thinker, originally conceived to crown The Gates of Hell.
- The Gates of Hell, inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy, a teeming mass of figures that the artist kept reworking for decades.
- The Burghers of Calais, a heroic and austere group.
- Balzac, a figure wrapped in his dressing gown, long a subject of controversy.
At the far end of the grounds, the pond and the shaded benches invite you to linger a while; the museum restaurant has a terrace overlooking the sculptures, a pleasant spot for a break between the indoor rooms and the garden.
